It's been about 6 months since I began working out at CrossFit SEO. If you've been following the blog since our move to Athens, you may remember how concerned I was about finding a new gym-home. See, I have been truly fortunate to find stellar gyms in Madison, Fargo, and Toledo that I was certain that my luck had run dry.
Well, I was most certainly wrong. And, I found an amazing gym in an unexpected place - a CrossFit box. In the past, I had tried CrossFit for a short time (under 4 months) but just didn't enjoy the workouts. What I didn't know at the time was that my personality and needs didn't jive well with that box. It was not necessarily CrossFit. So, here is what I have learned over the last few months.
1. Finding a certified/ affiliated CrossFit box is key! When researching CrossFit affiliated boxes visit the national CrossFit website to find a box in your area. After you've done that, there's still some more work to do.
Many boxes provide a free one-day trial or punch card. I recommend trying this option before signing up for a full membership. Also remember that within one box, there are usually multiple coaches with different styles. Try several coaches and times in the day, if you can, to learn their different styles and how that compares with your personality. It's also good to try different times in the day to see when your body is most adept for the various CrossFit workouts.
Also, each class itself, like the individuals that attend that class time, have a culture of their own. I am a bit of a floater as I frequent classes at 5am, 6am, 7am, and even 5pm. Ha, I may be known as the nomad because of this, but all of the members are welcoming in each class.
The 5am class, well they are fierce and a little intimidating (smile)... They're really not, but they put up big numbers consistently and universally. But let's face it, these people enjoy working out at 5am! As a newbie I was completely intimidated to try this class. I actually had someone approach me about joining SEO. My first response - don't start out with the 5am class. Now this was a few months ago, before I had even tried out the class so I shouldn't have given such a damning review lol.
Just starting out? The 7am class is perfect. Jolene lovingly calls us the "Turtles." Don't let that name fool you because we're still putting in WORK at 7am, but we sometimes mosey along from one thing to the next. We tend to be a little opinionated and chatty as well!
My staple class is the 6am group. Good mix of professionals and a few undergrad/graduate students sprinkled in. All very hard working individuals that are very supportive of each others' gains.
Now when I want to feel youthful I attend the 5pm class although professionals are still in the midst. I enjoy this group, but not the post workday time. I end up dreading the entire work day when I don't get my morning workouts but always glad when I see the "kids" at 5pm.
2. It's still important to know that each box has its own culture just as any establishment. I'll be honest, Jolene is bad ass. She's a former competitive gymnast and professional CrossFit athlete - like the ones you see on tv. She's currently like 8 months pregnant and still killing everyone in their WODs, especially her husband Brandon, which I love haha. But, she is so down to earth and has built a gym that welcomes all. Just like a traditional gym or fitness center - each gym has its own feel and culture. By culture I just mean the aura when you are there. I'm not doing a thorough job explaining, but CrossFit SEO is just a place you want to return.
3. Balanced workouts. Jolene does a phenomenal job at balancing the daily workouts, or WODs. Some days we do the traditional CrossFit workouts such as "The Girls," olympic-style lifts and the WODs named after fallen soldiers. However, more often than not she customizes our workouts so we receive a balanced weekly workout.
Most weeks I attend classes 4-5 times, and then attend Saturday's open gym to work on foundational skills independently. I once asked Jolene if there were certain leg days or cardio-intense days and she simply said no! My organized self is actually ok with this because even if I take a day off, I still get balanced workouts throughout the whole week. And then when I review the whole month of WODs I can really see the varied workouts completed.
We do typically, or at least I conjure, one day of running per week. This is the one day I rejoice because it's my strength. Ha, I kid every time. Well, at least I can makeup for any other deficits with the running portion of the WOD.
4. CrossFit sometimes gets a negative reputation because of the CrossFit Games, and people automatically assume that you must be competitive to do CrossFit. I have found the exact opposite in both boxes that I worked-out at. Rather, I see CrossFit as an avenue for personal growth and betterment for myself and those around me.
I get so inspired by the advanced athletes at CrossFit SEO. Each of them has stories of not being able to do one double-under, a kipping pull-up, lifting more than the trainer bar, and so on. Today you see them getting PRs and killing their workouts. In this way, each athlete is on a personal journey to improved health. Improved health and maximum fitness within the CrossFit philosophy is more than just the weight on your bar. CrossFit aims to improve all areas of fitness, you can read more about the philosophy on the CrossFit website, What is CrossFit?
5. In line with my previous thought, keeping a journal or using the various CrossFit apps is important for many reasons so that you can review this growth. As a beginner, it can diminish your ego when a coach insists that you use a trainer bar, or asks you to simply use a weighted bar with no additional plates. However, this is for your good. I highly recommend those seeking a box to find one that embraces proper form over extreme weights. As you master form, you then can begin adding weights under the guidance of your coach, and you want to be able to celebrate these milestones. And progress will be had.
6. You'll get out what you put in. Pretty sure this is universal for any activity and/or hobby that one embarks. The more energy, focus and attention that you puts into your workouts will be evidenced in your overall performance.
CrossFit memberships can be pricey but you do not have to purchase much after the basics. Check out my CrossFit Essentials blog post to get a full review, but all of those items won't make you a better athlete. If I had to pick one essential item for CrossFit, it would be flat tennis shoes.
For the first few weeks, Jolene may say first month, I wore my running shoes because, well, that's what I had. Once I purchased a flat tennis shoe, and shortly thereafter the CrossFit Nanos; I could tell the difference substantially. I am not going to say that it immediately resulted in a PR but it did assist me with my form. If you run, you may be aware that running shoes are constructed for emphasizing being on your toes, or the forefront of your foot. In CrossFit, you want to have your weight equally distributed, even more emphasis on your heels, to maximize your effort and achieve good form. So, running shoes are simply ineffective, and slightly detrimental for gains.
Circling back to my original point, if you want to make gains and improve on various skills; then it's paramount that you work at it. And, I don't imagine that any CrossFit box has an entry exam or criteria to join so they're used to adapting the movements for you but even still you must come to the box and practice. Like I said prior, CrossFit SEO offers many "open gym" slots which allow members to do pretty much whatever they wish. I use the time to work on some basics - double-unders, kipping pull ups, and even various Olympic style lifts on Sat. Now, there are others that attend these sessions habitually, like several times a week, and guess what, you can tell.
7. (Warning:: Superficial observation ahead!) You may gain weight on the scale! I know, what woman wants to gain weight and wow you said that Michelyn. I'm keeping this reflection honest so let's keep it moving!
I did gain about 2-3lbs after starting CrossFit, but my clothes fit well. If I truly wanted to measure my gains, I'd retest my body fat percentage, but it's not that important to me at this point. However, I bring this up because this may frighten or even deter some females from pursuing CrossFit. I too have heard women say, well the scale isn't going down. We, as women, place so much emphasis on the number on the scale instead of our physique, in my opinion. Granted, I wouldn't want to start any workout that would make me gain 15 pounds. But, if it's a few pounds of muscle weight; I'm not fretting.
8. Friendship and community. CrossFit prizes itself at building a community of like-minded people that all enjoy fitness and healthy living, though I've gained more. So besides a great gym because of the workouts, I too enjoy CrossFit SEO for all its members. I truly respect and admire so many of them, and love the many conversations I've had with them after our classes.
The move to Athens was pretty painless because Team Kemp had previously worked with Coach Phillips and many of the other assistants, but it's been nice having another source for support.

Weekly Round-up Final Edition
I was planning to extend this series out until our trip to Hawaii in December. However, my feelings have changed over the last few weeks. I started this series when my family began our journey through the Whole 30 (week 1, week 2, week 3, week 4). Although I have really enjoyed documenting my weekly eats to you all; as it assisted with my accountability and was a good diary, it now is losing some steam!
Now, with the basketball season, my dinners and lunches are not as interesting because many days I am only feeding myself. I too am not following the Whole30 diet plan or even a strict Paleo diet. I am simply eating whole, organic, and as many local foods as possible.
I did take a few pictures of the eats from the week, but they were limited. For example, today I had eggs and bacon for breakfast; a salad for lunch; Donkey Coffee decaf coffee and trail mix for snack; and we will be having left-overs for dinner.
Because, I have received several text messages, Facebook messages, and blog comments from those that are enjoy this series. Please feel free to follow my three main food Pinterest boards: Whole30/Paleo, Side Dishes Galore, and What's For Dinner?!? I will continue to update those boards with new recipes, and who knows, maybe this series will come back in a few months!

CrossFit Essentials
I have been doing CrossFit for a few months, and have slowly been purchasing some of the must-haves for any new-comer to the sport. Many of the items on my list have been purchased, are waiting to be delivered, or I am just waiting for the right opportunity to pull the trigger (i.e., buy online). So, let's see what nine things made my list!
2. Reebok CrossFit Lifter Plus 2.1. You may be wondering, why in the world would one need two (or more) pairs of shoes for CrossFit. Well, this shoe is designed for heavy lifting like Olympic-style lifts and provides even more stability than the Nano. I have not purchased this shoe, but hope to soon, as it really allows you to grip the floor and feel stabilized when powering through heavy lifts!
3. Under Armour Power in Pink Water Bottle. When engaging in any of form of intensive exercise, one should stay hydrated and this water bottle will keep you hydrated in style.
4.Complete Light Compression Short 1.0 As you can see I am a fan of Hylete. As a member of CrossFit SEO, we get 20% off their entire website! Yes, please, and thank you. I love these shorts because they actually stay in place and are super flattering.
5. Knee High Performance Compression Socks 1.0 If you read my half marathon recap, you may have noticed that I wore pink compression sleeves. I can't really attest to them making a huge difference, but they were cute and matched my half marathon outfit. Well, I feel the same way about compression socks for CrossFit. I am not sure if I can tell a difference, but knee high socks look so cute with compression (boy) shorts, so I have purchased two pair so far :)
6. Ultra Thin CrossFit Adjustable Speed Cable Jump Rope Yes, the jump rope does matter! The speed cable jump ropes turn over quicker than a traditional jump rope. Make sure you buy one that is adjustable because you want to ensure it fits your height and ability levels. I recently learned that as a beginner, like myself, we want the rope slightly longer and then as you get better you can shorten it up a tad!
7. Weight Lifting Belt I recently got yelled at by my father for not wearing a weight lifting belt after boasting about my deadlift weight. As I improve on my form, I will need to invest in a weight lifting belt to ensure that I do not throw out my back.
8. Complete Performance 1.0 Hoodie Now that the weather is turning a little more cool, sweatshirts and long sleeve attire are ever more important, especially when you workout at a box because you WILL be running outdoors in ALL elements - rains, snow, sleet. Just last week it was pouring here in Athens and I just knew that the WOD would not include running outside... Guess who was wrong?!?! The WOD incorporated running 2.5 laps around the building and then 21 slamballs--7 times! Everyone was drenched!
9. Constantly Varied Gear This company has some of the cutest WOD, running, and workout tanks that I have seen thus far. They no longer have the tank above, but it was too cute not to post! Cute tanks and shirts are great for conversation starters, especially if you are new to a box.
Question of the Day: What gear do you think is essential for a CrossFit workout?

It is still fun to have a workout partner, and someone to remind you to take it easy with running + crossfit endeavors!
Indeed my running has not been stellar. I did 8 miles today (Sunday), so that will be accounted for in Week 3 diary. I have no goals for the half in October. I expect it will be a pretty dismal performance, and I am ok with that. Sometimes, you just got to get out there and Go!

Run Like A Girl
It's been a busy summer and a few plans fell to the wayside. I had plans to run two different half marathons - both in August. Welp, August is nearly over and I ran neither. Not a very good look I agree, but that does not mean I completely threw in the towel. Last week I registered for the Run Like A Girl Half Marathon in Columbus, OH in October.
I have another 6 weeks to train for this half, and running in Athens is simply no joke! No joke for two reasons. First, I have found it somewhat challenging to incorporate my training whilst doing CrossFit WODs. Difficult only because the CrossFit WODs are so taxing, but I am determined to get in some good runs in preparation. Second, Athens has sone pretty hilly areas, and lets be honest - I despise hill training. If I stick to the Hockkocking Adena Bikeway, then the path is flat and pretty simple. I, however, tend to get a little bored, and when I try to incorporate some runs throughout Uptown and Campus area, it gets a little tough. I guess this is a good thing - I know I need to work on my weaknesses, but its not too fun!
I figured I would resurrect my Workout in Review postings on Sunday so that I can stay accountable and also so I can start tracking my CrossFit workouts again!

Change of Plans, Rethinking My Training Plan & Listening to My Body
Happy Monday Folks! As the title indicates, there have been a few modifications and changes to my half marathon training and race! I have said before, but it never hurts to repeat myself - I am deplorable at taking rest days, stretching, and taking it easy overall in the workout department. Not that I have a six pack to show for all these efforts, one day!
Anywho, two weeks ago, before I went to Florida, Ireluctantly agreed decided to push back my half marathon to the following weekend. Coach Kemp was not enthused about the thought of me traveling to West Virginia by myself when he was in Canada! I begrudgingly agreed that it was not the best of ideas, and then joyfully found a race the following weekend in Dublin, Ohio, the Emerald City Half Marathon.
I actually am pretty enthused to have my chauffeur and cheerleader there for me at the race! Thanks Coach for being such a sport!
Now I technically have 7 weeks to prepare for this race, well I had started training, but now my eyes are set on a different half; you get what I mean. This gave me an opportunity to reflect on my current training plan... Which, to be honest, has been a little challenging for me to handle.
I think there are a number of factors that are contributing to my burn-out in the running department. First, I started CrossFit, and I will be honest, the workouts kick my butt!! I will share this week's workouts in a few. Sure, I have been working-out for some time, but my body is needing some time to adjust to the new workouts.
Second, I am horrible at stretching before and after workouts. I mean HORRIBLE! Thank heavens CrossFit SEO includes warm-ups and stretches post workouts, because if not, this lady would keep it trekking which is no good. I am going to enforce 10 minutes of stretching and rolling daily!
Third, gosh I hate admitting #3, but I am not sure if I gave myself enough down time between my marathon and training for this subsequent half. I am going to take a major break after this half marathon. I have not even looked at any race calendars nor will I allow myself. I am planning to take a graduate course in the fall, which I am hoping ties over my antsy tendencies of not feeling busy enough.
I was able to get in five workouts this week, some in Tampa and the others here in Athens. On Monday morning I took yet another 6am BodFit class with my girlfriends from high school; I too had taken an early morning class on Wednesday with the crew. Wow, if I was living in Tampa, I would definitely incorporate BodFit into my normal routine. It is pure insanity, not the workout, for 1.5 hours! My girlfriends, Elizabeth and Candice have been going for like 5 years, and I completely see why they are hooked. Candice drives like 30+ mins just to get to the studio! Honestly, that workout too had me questioning my fitness level, what the heck gives lately!?!
Tuesday was a rest day, and then was followed by a 1 hour run around campus on Wednesday! Thursday-Saturday were CrossFit SEO workouts!!!

Week 3 brought better runs and the addition of CrossFit classes! Ya'll I think I am in love with CrossFit SEO. I am beyond giddy that I found a gym home. See, it is the simple things that can make this girl content! I have been really fortunate to find stellar gyms in Fargo and Toledo, so I was a little worried that I would find yet another gym. I mean honestly, how good could my luck really be! Maybe I should start playing the lottery, my luck is good!
I am going to start diarying my workouts as I want to document my improvements in the weeks to come, especially while I am training for the half marathon. I thought of this idea on Wednesday, and then forgot to write the exercise from Friday down before Brandon, one of the instructors, erased it from the dry board! But, I do have the workouts from Wednesday and Thursday! And, on Friday I actually Rx on weights for all of the exercises, ugh, except one!

Happy Sunday! Week 2 of half marathon training was not as stellar as I would have liked, but who tries to stick to a plan whilst moving? Because of this, I have decided not to harbor on this less than stellar training week and congratulate myself for not completely putting my workouts on the back burner! Hey, I have 10 more weeks of training, so all is not lost just yet!
Do you see anything "new" about my workouts above? Yes, CrossFit! I took my first class at CrossFit SEO on Friday, and think I am going to join. This week I will do the one-week membership since I will be traveling to Tampa the following week. I figure I can get a month membership, if I so decide, once I return from a quick Florida get-away!
CrossFit is not foreign to me. I actually joined a CrossFit box while living in Fargo for a few months. A number of things made me decide to switch gyms, but I have aways admired the CrossFit philosophy. I can't give a full review just yet, but my first impressions are positive. Everyone was very friendly!
We have officially unpacked all of our belongings and it feels wonderful! I am so glad to be done with packing/unpacking and the unsettled feeling of knowing you are moving in XX days or weeks. Now, I have the "Athens Digs" to decorate. Do you enjoy interior decorating? I can't say it is one of my strong points, but I am going with it. I wish I could hire an interior decorator to handle the whole thing for me. Oh, and of course an endless budget would be great too!
