Is it July Already!?!

Where did June go? Honestly, I am a little shocked at how quickly June passed by! Did it go by quickly for you?

With a new month ahead of us, I figured I should dust off those June goals, and see how I did. If you remember, I had five lofty goals for the month of June (post here). Check out how I did, and I have a new goal for July!

1) Follow my weekly marathon plan to run the 2014 Parkersburg News Half Marathon in the middle of August.

July Goal 1: If you read my post from yesterday, you know I have chosen to run the Emerald City Half Marathon instead, and am revamping my training. Basically, I am planning not to kill myself with CrossFit and too many long, long runs. More later!

2) Complete our engagement session album from PhotoBin: I, at times, can procrastinate like the worst of them. Making an engagement session photo album would follow under this category as well as.... Done!

3) Chose photos for our Wedding Album.

July Goal 2:  I found a list of wedding "likes" in a notebook, thanks to this latest move. I still need to narrow it down to 100, but I am close to marking this off the list!!!

4) Follow the eating philosophy learned through Renegade's 7 Week Challenge!

July Goal 3: Start this before July 31st, since I really started being cognizant and planful of my eating yesterday, June 30th!

5) Unpack from the move: I think this one will be pretty simple! I do want to go through every single box though! While in Toledo, there were a few boxes that just had random things inside of them. I am hoping to unpack and organize EVERYTHING! Done!

Here are a few other things I crossed off my list in June. Yes, I am bragging since I technically got a F, maybe D if being nice. I need to boost my self-esteem and showcase the things I did get done which were not included in the original post, thanks for appeasing me.

  1. Change address on ALL accounts
  2. Registered as a non-degree seeking graduate student at Ohio University
  3. Made some spreadsheets for tax/budgeting reasons
  4. Organized my NCSP (Nationally Certified School Psychologist) licensure credits
4th Goal of July (pun intended):  Kind of associated with Goal #1, but I need to take rest days, stretch, and listen to my body. I discussed this in a previous post (here).

Question: Did you make goals for June? How did you fare?

June Goals & Workouts in Review (Half Marathon Edition)

Is it truly the month of June!?! It is, it is; and I am thoroughly pleased with the fun things in store for this busy month!

Am I the only crazy lady that loves a to-do list? I know many others do as well. You know with technology, many of us do not write on paper any longer. While in graduate school I used the old school day planner, only because I could then write a daily/weekly to-do list and highlight the things that I had accomplished! Kind of corny, I agree, but it felt very accomplishing to see my once white list turn yellow, purple, or pink! Back then, it was the small things. And well, I am not so sure if much has changed!

With a new month upon us, I figured it would be nice to develop a June To-Do List. I have found that sharing assists with accountability, so I am more likely to check these things off the list!

June 2014
Follow my weekly marathon plan: I mentioned in my previous post that I am planning to run the 2014 Parkersburg News Half Marathon in the middle of August. I developed my own, advanced half marathon training program, which can be found here.
Complete our engagement session album from PhotoBin: I, at times, can procrastinate like the worst of them. Making an engagement session photo album would follow under this category as well as....
Chose photos for our Wedding Album: My lovely photographers, BellowBlue Photography, (they are awesome!!!) provided all of the proofs to our wedding. It was my grand idea to arrange and make my own Wedding Photo Album. Well, almost two years later this lady has come to the conclusion that there are just some things that you must leave up to the professionals. I now just need to chose about 100 photos from the thousands taken to provide to Jon and Joan, simple right?!?!
Follow the eating philosophy learned through Renegade's 7 Week Challenge: I would not say that my "diet" has gone to complete shit, but it is getting close. This whole moving process can put a havoc on meal planning! I am BEYOND excited to return to my 5 meal eating regime very soon. I do still love my Quest Bars, especially Cookies & Cream, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, & White Chocolate Raspberry! If you have never heard of Quest bars, check out my review of all of their flavors, yum!
Unpack from the move: I think this one will be pretty simple! I do want to go through every single box though! While in Toledo, there were a few boxes that just had random things inside of them. I am hoping to unpack and organize EVERYTHING!

Killer WOD with Coach Kemp, below!

This is a great partner workout! One person does the workout, above, while the other runs or sprints on a treadmill. We did each exercise/run for 1 minute. The person on the treadmill was able to monitor the time while the other person did the exercise!

What a fun, intense workout we had! Coach Kemp was hilarious! He is a little out of shape, hehe and is currently layed out on the hotel bed.

Hope you try it out, and let me know your thoughts!

Glass City Marathon: Post Run Thoughts

The dust has settled, my body is feeling normal; now it is time to reflect on my training journey and race day!

I must confess, although while running at times I felt a little uncomfortable, hours after the race and days later I never got sore. Sure, I felt like I had completed a tough workout, but I was not miserable and/or in agony. I was pretty certain that I would be immobile for weeks, but actually I feel great!

It was probably good fortune that we traveled to Athens on Monday, because knowing myself I would have returned to regular workout training, if we had not. Being in Athens, and away from Renegade and Toledo streets, has forced me to rest. You know I despise rest days even though they are critical for your body.

I would state that I ran this marathon, and did not race it! And, I think that is partially why I was not sore. Exhausted, yes! Oh, I guess I should give myself credit for my nutrition, weight training, and of course runs that supported this hefty goal. But, I was not overly exerting myself during the run. I guess next time, yes there will be a next time, I will push myself to race the marathon instead of simply trying to complete it.

I had four goals to achieve on race day. How did I fare? Listen to my post-race commentary:

Goal 1: Finish Alive

When making goals, I believe in always throwing in one or two that are manageable and achievable. My first goal, to finish alive would fall under that category. I was pretty certain that I would not collapse while completing this marathon. (Disclaimer: I hope no one takes offense to my first goal. I do realize that there are a number of individuals who have lost their lives running in marathons. I, in no way, am downplaying those catastrophes).

Goal 2: Not Walk

My second goal, which obviously was pretty hefty, was to not walk. I already discussed my disappointment in walking in my other post, but to achieve three of my four goals is not bad. I have already promised myself that for Marathon #2, I will absolutely not walk. And in hindsight, had there not been the wind, I am pretty confident that I would not have.

Now, I saw and passed many runners that were walking pretty early on in the route. So, I am proud that I was able to hold off until Mile 21.

Goal 3: Finish Under 4h30mins

I finished the race in 4h26mins, only 4 minutes under that crucial mark, but I will take it. In the running world, 4 minutes is actually a significant amount of time. Shoot, seconds are huge. I was really impressed with my ability to listen to my body and progress through the marathon at my "pace." I have a tendency, during races, to start out way too fast. This can also be challenging because you are trying to weave and bob out of traffic. My wall at Mile 21 was more the result from the wind than anything.

While running, I continuously asked myself if I was comfortable, and if the pace I was running resembled all of my training runs. If the answer was "no," I would slow down or speed up. Now, most people utilize a watch to do this, I know. Like I said, my Garmin is shot, so I honestly did all of this training just by how my body felt.

For my second marathon, whenever that may be, I will include some sprint workouts. I honestly trained for distance; rather, than speed. So looking ahead, I would like to incorporate both in my workout plans. I too would like to purchase a new Garmin or Polar. I feel like Polar's are the new big thing, everyone has one. Why am I late on this bandwagon?

Above is the Start Time of Marathon, Not Indicating when I first crossed the Start line.
Goal 4: Have Fun

This final goal may sound funny as one may wonder how in the world do you have fun running 26 miles! Well, I enjoyed every minute of it, minus the 4 or so windy miles. I also enjoyed the training and the excitement that led up to the big day. Running has provided an outlet for personal thought and reflection. I often get asked if I run alone or with a group. For the most part, I run solo and I am content with that. I, however, also enjoy running with others. Want to run?

In addition, I have lived much of my life very active. I have also excelled in several competitive ventures - dance, pageantry, and academics. As I age, I want to continually push myself, strive for new goals, and outlets that are personal to me. I think as we age, and especially as women, we struggle to continually grow as a person because we are caring for others. Life brings obstacles and challenges, and I enjoy having outlets and personal aspirations.

Time is Ticking Away……

Or, is it?

A few posts ago I explained why I enjoy running so much. Specifically, I shared with you my five reasons for running. Reason #3 stated that running is a time in which my mind processes lots of my thoughts. Well, back in November I had a “brain fart” mid-run… I literally forgot how old I was! I actually stopped running and began calculating my age. “Wait”, I thought. “Am I really 28 years-old?... O-M-G! I am!” So after my brief calculation break, my disbelief at my age, I began running again. As an aside, I cannot be certain if the cold weather (20 F) or the long run (9 miles) was the culprit to my inability to recollect my age. I figure both are valid hypothesis.

I continued my run reflecting on the milestones that at one time I had planned for myself. These included that I was to be married by 25 and have my first child by 27 or 28 (there were a host more, but these are the important ones for this post). Well, obviously those milestones did not occur, lol. But what I really realized is that age is just a number and that I am on a journey through life.  Sometimes you can’t put an age criteria for accomplishing a goal or life experience.

This topic resonates because today is my boyfriend’s 30th birthday! This morning I asked if he felt any different and he responded: “I feel like an old man.” Well, I hope he is kidding because I do not think 30 is old at all. Hasn’t he just started?!?

I guess I look at my parents who are nearing sixty and don’t view them as elderly one bit. My mother is still out here dressing fly as ever, going to the gym… Shoot she even decided to be a flight attendant in her 50s. She wanted to do something for herself. She explained that she has lived for others (following my dad around, raising me, etc.) that she now wanted to do something adventurous. I am so proud of her. She travels worldwide and loves it (My father on the other hand... Well, he would be happy if she sat at home, lol).

So I guess this post is for those that are feeling the “clock ticking” or for those that are tired of people asking when will you graduate, get married, have children, start a different job, buy a home….. My message is to make these steps when YOU are ready. People and society, in general, place too much pressure on conformity to certain age-like milestones. I just do not think they are fair! Be you, be different!
