Though the college/high school men's basketball season has not officially ended, I wanted to take a moment to thank the five coach's wives that participated in my A-Game Attire feature series for the 2014-15 season!
Most of these women are strangers in many respects, though I do feel a connection because of the shared life experiences that are the norm in our lives. Of course I loved all of their game-day attires, learning about their respective schools, and how they met their significant others; but the recommendations that they all shared on living as a coach's wife were my most cherished aspect of each feature!
Without furtherado, let me re-introduce you to my starting 5 for the 2014-15 season:
Point Guard - Danyelle Musselman
Shooting Guard - Andrea Hansen
Small Forward - Lisa Compton
Power Forward - Ashley Pittman
Center - Amber Tysl
If you have not done so already, please head on over to each of these ladies' feature posts! Danyelle, Lisa, and Amber have blogs of their own which I do hope you follow! Andrea and Ashley have personal businesses/professions that they discussed on their features, and they be be able to help you in that regard.
As I get ready to head to Indianapolis, I am looking forward to meeting some of the women that were featured, seeing my previously acquainted coach's wives whose husbands work nationwide, and hopefully making new friends.

Rain, Rain, Go Away!: Ohio vs. St. Bona
When I decided to wear an all-gray outfit to yesterday's game, I was really hopeful that I would not be bringing the dreary, rainy weather into the game! Welp, that is exactly what I did! Fans, I will not be wearing gray any longer.

Coaches Corner: Team BeachBody
With each of these Coaches Corner features, I get even more giddy! Maybe it is because I have known these ladies for years - well for as long as I have been a coach's significant other. I almost feel like we are traveling down this journey together - from staff at NDSU to new adventures! This is such a sisterhood that I embrace wholeheartedly. Andrea is such an amazing woman, mother, wife, and business woman that all can respect and admire. The University of Minnesota-Crookston (UMC) fans are fortunate to have Andrea as their First Lady of Men's Basketball.
How has the first few months of being the First Lady of
Golden Eagles basketball been going?
It was a little scary at first because I was leaving my job
as an interventional radiology technologist of 14 years to pursue a job that
would fit our new lifestyle as a wife of a Head Coach. Once we got to Crookston
I was fortunate enough to find a full-time job as a legal assistant at a local
law firm office. We are meeting a lot of
wonderful new people and adjusting to our new house, jobs, and daycare.
What has been your best experience thus far?
Besides the moment when Dan received the call that he would be the
new Head Coach at UMC I would say the week of Thanksgiving when Dan’s family
came to visit and we all road tripped to the UMC vs. NDSU game in Fargo. It was
fun to be back in Fargo where this journey all started. Although UMC fell short
by only 1 point, it was a fun game and great see old friends.
Any fun outings and/or family events with the MBB staff or another staff at Crookston.
We hosted our first team meal at our house in September. It was fun to have all 17 guys over for ribs, chicken, mashed potatoes, and all the fixings. It’s amazing how much athletes can eat! We also had Thanksgiving dinner at our house with Dans’s parents, sister, and the Men’s Basketball Coaches.
Tell us a little about that the Coach Weisse ”courtship tactics,” lol? How did you meet? And, how did he propose?
Tell us a little about that the Coach Weisse ”courtship tactics,” lol? How did you meet? And, how did he propose?
We met on Match.com and 11 months later we were engaged. When he proposed, he had flowers delivered to my shipping store, Goin’ Postal, but there was no name on the flowers. I thought they were delivered by mistake. My business partners were in on it and they played it off very well. When I got home I found more flowers and a matching card. Then I realized what was going on. He got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. Of course I said yes and the next day he went recruiting for 9 days. Lol!
And four years later you are the proud parents of two little ones – Makenna and Ethan. Have they adjusted well to living in Crookston?
And four years later you are the proud parents of two little ones – Makenna and Ethan. Have they adjusted well to living in Crookston?
Ethan wasn’t quite two when we moved so he really didn’t know any different. Makenna knew we were moving, but her first response was, “ We don’t have any balloons.” Referencing the movie “UP” we had just seen 20 times. They have adjusted really well. They are both at the Catholic Sunrise Center and it only took a couple of days for them to get used to their new daycare. As Makenna would say, “Mom, its school not daycare”.
Tell us a little about Makenna and Ethan.
Tell us a little about Makenna and Ethan.
Makenna (Kenna Bear) will be 4 in January and is Daddy’s little princess. She acts so much older then she really is. She negotiates everything and has a very good memory. Sometimes I have to stop and remind myself that she is not even 4 yet. She loves gymnastics, playing with her dolls, playing dress up and singing. Dan taught her the Star Spangled Banner when she was a little over 2 years old! She just started ice-skating lessons and is doing very well.
Ethan turned 2 in August and he is all boy! He keeps us on our toes that’s for sure. He like trucks, car tools and anything sports. He’s our little clown, his favorite outfit is a pull up and snow boots! He loves going to games and cheering with Mom. His current phrase is “Box out!”
And with your move to Crookston came some new experiences and roles for yourself. You recently became an Independent Team BeachBody Coach. What is BeachBody?
If you have ever heard of Insanity or P90x, this is the company that produces those workout videos. They also have the best daily source of dense nutrition on the market called Shakeology, plus a lot of other great products.
What made you decide to become a BeachBody coach?
What made you decide to become a BeachBody coach?
I used to be a really active person. Softball, rollerblading, lifting weights, playing golf, hiking, biking. You name it, I did it (or at least would try it). I even ran a marathon! Which I’m sure I don’t think that I will ever do that again. That’s when a full time job, owning a shipping store, and kids just kind of took over. After having Ethan, I really wanted to start exercising again, but I felt like I never had the time. Excuses, I know. Well, right before we moved to Crookston, Dan’s brother asked if I would be interested in joining BeachBody. I said yes right away. I saw this as an opportunity for motivation and accountability that I needed. This was the perfect time to incorporate working out into my daily routine. Once I started, I realized what a great opportunity it was to help others and pay it forward.
How do you help others lose weight?
How do you help others lose weight?
Once someone decides they want to change their lifestyle by getting healthy and fit, I will help them pick out a program that is tailored to their specific goals along with Shakeology. From there, they get support and accountability from me as well as others in the group. It is a lot of fun! What’s great about this is that a person has the opportunity to do whatever they want with the program. Whether they become a coach and pay it forward or to stay as a customer. It is great either way.
Has Coach Weisse jumped on the bandwagon?
Has Coach Weisse jumped on the bandwagon?
He was actually drinking Shakeology before I was. I just never knew there was so much more to it and that you can get paid to work out and help others at the same time!
Last question – what advice do you have for “new” coach’s wives and those that are engaged to coaches?
1. You will need “me time” every once in a while! While the coaching husband can be gone for long periods of time, that leaves you to take care of the kids, the house, work, any issues that could possibly happen, like shoveling a foot of snow while being pregnant. I make sure to get a work out in even if it turns into a family affair. So when he is home make sure to take the time to get a coffee, a glass of wine with friends, or even a quick workout and give yourself a break, you’ve earned it!
2. Find a reliable babysitter. Date nights are very important, even if it is just to Wal-Mart for Black Friday shopping for an hour.
3. When they are on the road recruiting, or on a road trip sometimes it does get a bit overwhelming, but at the end of every season you will look back, think about all the ups and downs, wins, loses and say, “That was awesome! I can’t wait for next season!”

Edging Past & I Don't Like It!
Last night was not my fondest as a sports fan and enthusiast. Not only did my Alma mater #1, the University of Florida, lose to in-state rival Florida State, but somehow Belmont edged past my Ohio Bobcats as well! My only saving grace is that Alma mater #2, University of Wisconsin, beat Minnesota. Lawdy, it would have been a sad and gloomy Sunday if I would have been 0-3. However, I am a competitor, and 1-2 is not sitting well with this lady!
This is my favorite A-Game Attire ensemble to date! I don't know this J.Crew sweater is oh so cozy, and I have had it for years!!!

Although the footall season is nearly over, the basketball season is still at its infancy. So much can occur in the next couple of weeks and months, so I am defintely not losing faith!
Ok, I have maybe lost faith in my dem' Florida boys! Ugh, I was really looking forward to a repeat of last year' s Final Four when Alma mater #1 and #2 were in the Final Four! Praise the lord, that I have two Alma maters to root for!

That Was A Close One - Bobcats vs Golden Lions
This post is coming a little later in the day then I typically prefer. Coach Kemp assists me with embedding my A-Game Attire emblem on each of my photos. Today, he had practice and then I asked him to complete a last-minute grocery store visit, and well we know how those lines are this time of the year!
Well, last night's game was a little more agonizing than anyone in the Convo expected! You know, sometimes teams under-estimate their opponents and it ends up biting them in their rear! In my humble, non-basketball knowing opinion, this was the problem with our game verse University Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
Sure, we won so I am not completely complaining. Contrarily, I am simply making an observation; one that Coach Kemp will certainly give me a stern side-eye later for making, but you know I am pretty opinionated! He even shared this fact in his recent College Chalktalk article about "Family!"

Oh, and these are shorts, not a skirt! Too cute, right?!?! I too wore these shorts at one of the first football games of the season.

A-Game Attire with Restless Arrow
Hey y’all! I am so thankful for Michelyn for having me today! She may be regretting this once she realizes I’m truly no help at all because I don’t buy name brand so most of the clothes I have on in the following pictures are just lucky finds (or borrowed from my mom…oops!)!
As a coach’s wife, it’s fun to dress in his team colors! Not only does it give me a chance to be a little bit creative but the possibilities are endless…say if I just want to wear a t-shirt that day, then a team shirt it is and I can call it a day! But, if there’s a big game or I’m coming straight from work then I need something a little more dressy, or trendy. I also love to dress my boys in Coach’s team colors! I wish I had a picture but they were still at daycare when I snapped these! (If you're interested in how the Coach and I met, you can read our little love story...we actually met the first day of kindergarten!).
I’m not sure if Michelyn knew this or not, but I actually used to be a coach! I used to coach cheerleading and our colors were black and gold, and let me just tell you, black is SO easy to find! Now, red and navy? Not so much! But we LOVE our little small town. Russ is actually coaching at the high school where we graduated so it makes this job extra special! We have a total of three red lights in our town but we wouldn't change a thing about the close knit community. We know people or know their families and we can always make a connection somehow. As teachers, we are both teaching in places we went to school! Russ and I actually coached and taught in a previous district before we came back home so it was fun to be able to work together, ride to school together, and learn from those coaching experiences. Now, I am truly convinced this has helped shape me as a coach's wife. I understand the demands because I lived it first hand. If I could offer any advice, it would be to be supportive no matter what...and don't ask a lot of questions if they lose. :)
Now, for what I wear! Thankfully, several weeks ago, I found a red shirt for $5 at the Dollar General of all places! My goal was to use five ways so that you see you don't have to spend big bucks to have the look you're going for!
First,I used it as a bigger shirt with leggings and boots plus a scarf my mom gave me last year.
Next, I threw it on with some jeans, my mom's crochet vest, and some knee high boots!!
Keeping with the comfortable look of jeans, I just took the vest off and threw on my very favorite Goodwill find--cowboy boots for $6.25! (I tied the shirt up in the back so it gave a different look.)

I was excited next for my favorite white jeans from Old Navy that I got for $8 two years ago! I paired it with my cowboy boots and a Forever 21 denim shirt ($3.99 at Goodwill!).
Finally, I just took off the denim and put on a lace vest (my mom’s) to give it a more feminine look!
Five easy outfits all from one five dollar shirt! (Psst...my accessories are from my ALL TIME favorite...Noonday Collection! These are handcrafted paper beads that help these women provide for their families. My brown wrap bracelet is from Food for the Hungry! (I know these organizations would be so grateful for your support!)
Thank you, again, Michelyn, for having me! You can check out more of my budget friendly purchases (mostly from thrift stores!) on my blog, Restless Arrow!

Amber was the first blogger/coach's wife to approach me about this feature, and I just love how she showcased 5 separate outfits! Whenever I buy clothes, I try to purchase versatile items that can be worn several times and several ways. Well, Amber has shown me up on my abilities. And please, please head on over to her blog! She has the most practical, yet beautiful thrifted Thanksgiving tablescape on her blog now! And, do not even get me started on her recent kitchen renovation which was so budget-friendly ($5000) but you would never guess it from the final reveal! I have read that post several times in pure amazement!

Ready to Rumble: Ohio vs. Marietta
The Ohio Men's Basketball season has officially kicked off, and boy was there a huge turnout for this year's exhibition game verse Marietta! We had 11,108 fans in attendance and the entire Marching 110 who were very entertaining. The atmosphere at the game was one to be marveled at, and I hope we continue to see the same turnout for the remainder of the season.
Although we won, the game was a little shakey at times! I need to reconsider wearing long shirts as the Convocation is on the warmer side, and then I was perspiring a little more than I would have liked for an exhibition.
But, at the end of the day - a win is a win! Not so sure the coaching staff would agree, but I am just a coach's wife so I am happy! If you want to know more details about the game, then head here for the Marietta vs Ohio Box Score.
Final Score: 82-69
With the Ohio MBB commencement is
a kick-off of my own -- A-Game Attire series in which I and other
college and high school basketball wives showcase our team-inspired
game-day apparel!
Although
I do not consider myself a fashion blogger, there is no denying the
fact that I enjoy shopping and clothes, in general, also including
accessories and shoes.
My shoe department is one to be marveled at, if I
do say so myself. I attribute my clothes and shoes obsession to the
fact that I wore a school uniform for nearly 12 years.
If you or a friend is a college/high school basketball wife (or significant other), please CONTACT ME if you are interested in being showcased!
Coaches' kids are also welcome to join in on the fun!

Blog Facelift Edition 2.0
Back in May of 2012, this blog saw it's first facelift which included a name change from Brains & Beauty to it's current name. Well, here we are in 2014, and another facelift has arisen.
I am pretty pleased with my facelift, and so happy that Coach Kemp put in the hours to make my vision a reality! Coach Kemp has spent many years developing recruiting materials, and is a self-taught Adobe PhotoShop Genius!
What are your thoughts?
Overall, I felt like the blog was a little too youthful with so much lavender and the polka dots; and figured a white background would mature it overall. Coach Kemp also would not hear my thoughts of ridding the caricature. He may be more attached than I, lol.
Do you see any new additions? Yes, that is Prince sitting on the stack of books vying for some love and attention - which he is obviously lacking.
Go Bobcats!

Athens 6 Week Update!
Happy Monday folks! I know, I was MIA for a little bit! You forgive me, right!? Good, I love you for it!
Team Kemp has officially resided in Athens for 6 weeks and I am proud to announce that I love it! I know, this city girl actually loves the college-town of Athens, OH! Can you believe it? I am a little shocked to be honest!
If you have been following my blog, all 4 of you, you know I was anxious about the move. For starters we had just moved from Fargo, ND to Toledo, OH and I was finally feeling "settled." Part of my angst for our move to Athens - was simply that we were moving AGAIN!!! You can read about that in this post.
Then there was the obvious, I am a city girl, and was moving to a city that's focus is the university. Now I did view this as a positive, and still do. It is so awesome to walk around town and see students and others adorning Ohio University gear! Like super awesome. NDSU and Toledo both have a great fans base, but being a coach's wife, it is really nice seeing Ohio gear everywhere you go, even in the local restaurants! I did attend undergrad at the University of Florida which too is a college-town, but being a student, I had no perspective of living in Gainesville as an adult. It was challenging at first to imagine myself being an adult in a college-town. I am here to report, it is going just fine!
Granted I have only lived here for six weeks, I can announce that there is more happening than simply the university! Athens is home to some of the most beautiful trails and parks, in my opinion. On Saturday, I had the opportunity to run the Sells Park with some members of CrossFit SEO! Wow, just beautiful, and you would never even guess that the trail is tucked behind East State Street! Check out the Athens Trail Network, I am giddy just looking at all the options!
And talking about CrossFit SEO!!! Love my gym!!! The instructors are beyond amazing!!! (Wow, lots of exclamation points for those few sentences, lol.) For starters they are all super knowledgeable about CrossFit, proper form; and then top it off with their great personalities. I will forever cherish Renegade (Toledo) and Maximum Performance and Fitness (Fargo), but I again struck gold with CrossFit SEO!!! Just realized, that I previously raved about them in this post too.
Along with fitness, I have a love for the Athens Farmer's Market. Coach Kemp recently got some bummer dental news, so we have removed all extra sugars from our diet. Prior to this realization, we too had discussed lowering our dairy-intake overall. The farmer's market is convenient and open three days a week in the summer (Wednesday, Thursday [in the evening], and Saturday). I have been buying a large portion of our veggies and fruits from the market, swoon!
My shopping fix, or obsession, has been met with our new subscription to Amazon Prime. Not so sure where Coach Kemp and I have been, but hello free shipping! Even if I were living in a big city, I would still use Amazon. I love that everything can be found on one website. I kind of detest having to visit multiple online stores and even store fronts to find what I am looking for. Oh, and I am excited to check out the TJ Maxx in Parkersburg, WV which is only like a 45 minute drive. And if I just need a quick fix, then I head over to Uptown Athens where there are a number of cute stores! I am looking forward to stopping by Nelsonville too for some shopping as well.
Are you wondering about restaurants? Well, Athens has that covered too! We try to dine at the restaurants that buy local foods, those 30 Mile Meal restaurants, and they have all been delicious. A few of my favorites include: Zoe Fine Dining, Casa Nueva, Sol Restaurant & Run Bar, and Crumbs! I too had a slight obsession with Insomnia Cookies, but we have placed a ban since we are not eating sugar; thank heavens as my waist band is very appreciative.
But the real reason the last six weeks have gone so wonderful for Team Kemp is because of the amazing people, and ladies in particular, that I have met thus far! Wow! I am beyond amazed at how genuinely friendly everyone is. This of course includes the amazing wives of Ohio Basketball but also extends to other women I have been fortunate to meet, to date. Everyone is so welcoming, inviting me to ladies dates, and functions. My social calendar is popping!!! Whoop whoop! And Prince has been invited to a few of these outings as well.
I know I have only tipped the ice in Athens. I am looking forward to partaking in some of the fun festivals and other outdoor spots like the beach! Of course I am super pumped for Ohio athletic events, Go Bobcats!

Words of Wisdom: From One Coach's Wife to the Next
Remember when I was in Dallas for the Final Four? Yea, that was only weeks ago, but wow lots has happened since that time! Let's see, for starter's Coach Kemp got a new gig with Ohio University! Oh, and then I ran my first marathon. Yea, that has all happened in like 6 weeks!
If you read my Final Four posts (here, here, and here), then you know that I visited with Kelly Ryan, wife to Bo Ryan, while in Dallas. This was not the first time that I had the opportunity to interact with Kelly, but I had not seen her in over a year. Overall, it was nice to chat with her, and of course, Emily Ryan, wife to Will Ryan (also on staff at Ohio University). Emily and I were discussing my angst with joining Twitter, which I later succumbed to and got an account, and all the other social media Apps out there. Honestly, I think we live in a time when social media and news is at an all-time high and crazy level. I mean can we even discuss the Solange and Jay-Z debacle. Lordy, it's a little too much!
Well beginning in April the basketball carousel begins to twirl, and coaches get fired, hired, and move around like they are hot potatoes. I always get super stressed for those coaches that lose their jobs. I do realize its the nature of the job, but it just freaks me out, EVERY SINGLE TIME. And I know, half the time I do not even know the people, but most of them have families, and I simply feel for them.
So my angst for those coaches also comes for my own family! Trying to make and feel at home in a city that one may not call home for very long, can at times, be challenging. I have a girlfriend whose husband works for Exxon, and their family has moved a few times, with an impending move this winter. We speak often about the struggles of being a female making friends in new cities! Let's be honest, it is not easy!
And then moving to cities far away from your immediate family is also not easy! I envy my friends that have lived in their hometown and most likely will never leave! I sometimes chuckle when asked where are we moving to next, or where would I like to live. Unfortunately, those conversations truly do not happen in the Kemp Household. We move to the city where the next opportunity resides!
So of course when Kelly sat down, I asked her how she has handled and handles feeling settled. She candidly shared how quickly the process was when Bo got the job at UW-Madison. She shared that he came home in the middle of the day with Saul Phillips (yea the Head Coach at Ohio University!) to tell her Saul was driving him out to Madison for an interview. And then like the next day he was hired! I, of course, am leaving out a few details, but that was the gist of the timeline. Emily and I acknowledged that back then there was no Facebook, Twitter, and ESPN reports 24-7 speculating on who was getting jobs. However, she shared that she was not really entrenched in all the speculations and was going about her day to day. And one may now ask, why did you get Twitter?!?! I know, I know, LoL!
But overall, Kelly shared this one important take away - Live your life like you will reside in that city forever!
So I left Kelly with that notion with a smile on my face to learn days later that I would be moving, AGAIN! However, now that I am over that (blog post here), I am forever, grateful for her words of wisdom. I know coaching is not the only profession with a high transiency level, but I am really Type A and overall do not like change! I do best with routine, and it takes me a while to get used to the realization that my current day-to-day will be changing. Luckily, this lady gets to keep her job so I will still work with my same colleagues - Amen for that!

Question of the Day: Do you like change? have you lived in the same city your entire life? Want to move? To where?

Road to the Final Four: Thursday & Friday
Well hello from Texas! Some days have been busier than others, so I decided to combine my recaps of Thursday and Friday!
On Thursday, I woke around 9:00am feeling really good after my night out with the boys on Wednesday! Honestly, I was quite concerned with my ability to "hang with the boys" solo but I had a lot of fun on Wednesday. I was not sure what Thursday had in store, I knew that many of my fellow basketball wives were arriving Thursday evening, so I figured I should get a good workout in. I was pleasantly surprised when I was the only person in the workout room for like 3 hours! I ended up running 10 miles and then followed that up with a 10 mile bike ride as well! Coach Kemp returned from the NABC conference around 4:00pm, and we just rested up.
Coach Kemp's parents were also in town as Dr. Kemp, my father-in-law, had a medical conference to attend. We met his parents at the The Oceanaire Seafood Room. Dinner was delightful, I ate the Wild Alaskan Halibut. And even more special because of the company that we were surrounded by. My father-in-law is a huge Wisconsin fan and he was not very pleased with my outfit!
The comical thing is that it was really a coincidence that I was wearing orange and blue!
After dinner we headed back to our hotel where we waited for the ladies to arrive. Unfortunately, Stephanie and Katie's flights were majorly delayed so Coach Kemp and I headed out to meet our Toledo staff in the McKinney area of town.
Friday was a really, really fun day! Well, if you are a basketball fan, at least. I again woke up around 8:00am, and worked out. On Friday the gym was PACKED with coaches so I was very pleased with myself for running a long-distance run the day before. I did a quick 3.5 mile jog and then headed to the Hilton Anatole - team hotel for the Gators and Badgers! I went to the Hilton Anatole to meet up with Emily Ryan, wife to Will Ryan and daughter-in-law to Bo Ryan. It was nice to catch up with Emily and her boys since I haven't seen them in a number of months. Prior to heading out to the AT&T Stadium, we hung out in the Badger dining/game room. I did not get too many photos because the players and coaches/staff were also in the room; however, it was really neat. I also had a nice conversation with Kelly Ryan, I will post more about that later.
We then got on the UW Family and Administrator bus and headed to the AT&T Stadium which is actually in Arlington, TX. Wow! That stadium is humongous!

Even though I am married to a coach, I have never attended a shoot-around, so it was a first for me. I think Coach Kemp was a little bummed that he was not able to experience the fun since he is such a big Wisconsin fan. Although we have been having fun, Coach has also been attending lots of convention meetings.
After the 50-minute shoot-around, we re-boarded the bus and headed back to the Hilton Anatole. By this time, Coach Kemp let me know that we had plans with some of our basketball friends, so I had to rush back to our hotel to get dressed!
We dined with Coach Richman, Coach Olson, and their wives at Ocean Prime! I highly recommend their Teriyaki Salmon - it was so yummy! After dinner we went to the Adidas party, and out to a few other bars/clubs in the Uptown area.
